WordPress Works in One Browser but Not Another: A Repair Checklist

A comparison worksheet and seven fictional examples to separate browser differences from profiles, assets, viewport changes and incomplete evidence.

If your WordPress website works in Chrome but breaks in Safari, Firefox or another browser, compare the same task under recorded conditions first. A working page on the owner’s laptop is little comfort when a visitor cannot open navigation or request an appointment. However, the browser’s name is only the starting observation. Different sessions, files, extensions and window sizes can all creep into the comparison.

For two observed examples of repair acceptance, see the layout and cookie-preference repair records: original symptoms, confirmed causes, applied changes and public rechecks on our own websites.

This guide helps you commission a focused repair and define its acceptance test. It includes an original comparison worksheet and seven fictional pairs of observations classified in a local exercise. We did not run those incidents in real browsers: the exercise checks what the records support. If the problem blocks an important journey, request a WordPress repair assessment with the public URL, steps and two observed conditions.

Describe the failed task before blaming the browser

Choose one small action: expanding a menu level, selecting a date, dismissing a dialog or advancing a form. State what should happen and what happened instead. “The website looks wrong” leaves the next technician guessing. “The calendar opens, but selecting a date does not populate the field” gives them a test to prepare.

Separate appearance from behaviour. A substituted font can change a button’s width; an apparently normal button can sit beneath an invisible overlay. A screenshot records presentation, while a short sequence can explain the interaction. Retain whichever evidence helps and remove private page content or personal information.

Record successful paths too. If keyboard activation works while tapping does nothing, that distinction narrows the next investigation. It does not yet establish whether an overlay, event handler or browser implementation is responsible. Keep the observation separate from your preferred explanation.

Make the comparison repeatable for another person

Use the same final URL, language, published release and sequence of actions. Record browser and version, operating system, actual device, viewport width and zoom. Include the time and timezone. Two attempts separated by a deployment may test different software even when the address is unchanged.

Describe the session: anonymous visitor or authorised test account, ordinary or isolated profile, consent state and relevant extensions. Nobody needs your cookie values, password or exported profile in the initial report. They need a reproducible condition and an agreed way to access it.

Original worksheet for comparing a failure across browsers
Field Record for A and B Purpose
Journey Final URL, language, action and expected result Compare the same task
Environment Browser/version, system, device, viewport and zoom Separate context from presentation
State Session, profile, consent and extensions Identify changed conditions
Delivery HTML/assets release, network and relevant response Check what each attempt received
Evidence Time, screenshot, first useful error and request reference Support review and repetition

Leave an unknown field marked unknown. Filling it with “same” makes the sheet look tidier and the diagnosis weaker. You do not need to investigate the entire infrastructure before requesting help. The worksheet identifies what is known and which observations the assessment still needs to obtain.

Check profiles and sessions without erasing the clues

A private window is a particular test condition, rather than a neutral copy of your normal session. It can begin without your saved state and apply different restrictions. Comparing signed-in Chrome with private Safari changes several variables. The outcome matters, but it does not isolate browser compatibility.

Within the affected browser, repeat with an allowed test profile and record what changes. If the failure disappears, preserve that result and investigate what distinguishes the original profile. There is no need to ask every customer to erase all browsing data before anyone has captured the failing state.

For authentication, distinguish rejected credentials from a session that fails to continue after a redirect. Our WordPress login redirect-loop guide follows that separate path. Use authorised test accounts with suitable permissions when reproducing authenticated journeys, and avoid copying a customer’s live session.

Compare the files delivered to both attempts

Similar-looking pages can load different bundles. In the network panel, compare CSS and JavaScript URLs, their release identifiers and requests associated with the failed action. A resource appearing in the list might still contain an HTML error response instead of the expected script.

Record an older resource, blocked request or changed response when you observe one. A version query parameter helps identify a file, but does not alone prove identical content. Where required, the technical owner can compare the served content or its fingerprint with the deployed release.

The guide to WordPress CSS changes that do not appear separates stale delivery from a rule losing in the cascade. Preserve the initial contrast before purging anything. Then invalidate the identified layer or resource and repeat after the cache has also been used. A single forced reload is a limited sample.

Find a technical difference related to the action

For JavaScript, capture the first relevant exception, its file and the preceding request. A warning from a marketing tool does not prove that it broke navigation. Follow the implicated execution path or resource before proposing an optimisation exclusion.

For presentation, inspect the element, computed rule and conditions under which the rule applies. If a CSS feature is suspected, check support in the affected versions. The MDN CSS.supports() reference describes syntax support detection; a positive answer does not certify the layout or complete interaction.

Changing an emulated width or a User-Agent header does not amount to testing Safari, an iPhone or Firefox. Identify the browser and device actually used. MDN’s cross-browser testing introduction provides context for selecting environments and investigating implementation differences.

Seven fictional comparisons and their bounded conclusions

We constructed seven pairs of records and ran a local classifier. It first checks whether a browser interaction was recorded, then required fields, changed conditions and outcomes. The resulting labels describe the comparison’s quality. They do not diagnose WordPress, a particular browser engine or a customer incident.

Local exercise results using fictional records
Case Recorded observation Bounded conclusion
BR01 Ordinary versus private profile; different outcomes Comparison confounded by profile
BR02 Bundles R41 and R42; different outcomes Comparison confounded by assets
BR03 Viewports of 1280 and 390; different outcomes Comparison confounded by width
BR04 Recorded conditions match except browser; outcomes differ Difference in the controlled recorded sample; cause unresolved
BR05 Recorded conditions match; both outcomes expected Failure not reproduced in this sample
BR06 Network not identified for one attempt Evidence incomplete for this comparison
BR07 HTTP requests with a changed User-Agent header only Not a browser interaction test

The output contains three confounded comparisons, one difference with the recorded conditions controlled, one sample without a difference, one incomplete comparison and one non-browser check. These are seven teaching examples. BR04 still requires investigation: matching the worksheet fields cannot exclude every possible hidden variable.

BR05 does not justify dismissing the visitor’s report either. Those attempts simply did not reproduce it. Retain the original environment, ask which step is missing and agree a further sample. That gives the investigation somewhere to go beyond another exchange of “works here” screenshots.

Decide which tests need a prepared environment

Opening public navigation and sending an enquiry have different consequences. Before repeating forms, bookings or purchases, agree a test environment, fictional inputs and controlled destinations. A failed-looking screen can still leave a notification sent or a record created behind it.

If observation is limited to production, stay within the authorised steps and mark everything else pending. You do not need to complete a real purchase to show that the preceding selector is unresponsive. Record where the attempt stopped and which acceptance steps require sandbox payments, mail destinations or integration access.

Prioritise the blocked task and affected visitors you can identify. Broken navigation on a contact route deserves a different response from a decorative discrepancy. Two screenshots cannot establish a percentage of affected users. Any claim about commercial reach needs the available data, its period and limitations.

For an urgent WordPress repair, those boundaries help define a useful first intervention. Preserve the previous release, identify the proposed change and name its approver. If continuity requires temporarily restricting a feature, explain which route remains usable while the full correction is prepared. Keep that interim decision separate from final acceptance.

Provide useful evidence without handing over a session

Prepare a small packet: A/B worksheet, numbered steps, necessary screenshots and error or request references. Explain which attempt each file represents. A recording without its URL, time or session condition can be very polished and still fail to help the next person reproduce anything.

Chrome documents sanitized HAR network-log exports, which omit certain sensitive headers. Also review URLs, parameters, bodies and responses before sharing. The sanitized label does not guarantee that every private value has disappeared. Send only necessary evidence through the agreed channel.

If reproduction requires authentication, arrange an approved test account and the corresponding access. Do not publish a HAR, recovery link or copied cookies in the first contact form. Keep the evidence’s purpose clear enough that the supplier can request a narrower extract when possible.

Commission a repair with a verifiable scope

Ask the assessment to identify the implicated layer and proposed next change. The issue might involve theme code, a plugin, optimisation settings, session storage or an external resource. The proposal should connect its hypothesis to observations and make unresolved dependencies visible.

Separate diagnosis, correction and verification. When another provider controls a dependency, identify who will inspect it and what approval is needed. The WordPress repair quote brief for 2027 provides a scope comparison worksheet. This browser guide remains an evergreen reference for preparing the technical contrast.

Check the exclusions alongside the price. An initial assessment may identify a third-party component without including its replacement. A correction may restore future interactions while earlier failed enquiries require separate review. Make those boundaries explicit before comparing the offers or approving additional work.

A request for every visitor to switch browsers is a poor final acceptance test. An interim continuity measure can be agreed while investigation continues, with its limits recorded. The final handover needs to resolve or explicitly delimit behaviour in the environments actually included in the engagement.

Accept the result against the original journey

Before implementation, agree the included environments and expected result. Afterwards, repeat the original steps in the affected browser and the control browser. Retain versions, conditions, time and evidence. Include keyboard, touch or mouse as appropriate to the action that failed.

Check an initial visit and a subsequent visit where caching or storage matters. For consent-dependent behaviour, verify the relevant choices without making marketing acceptance a requirement for an essential control. Document any intentional differences as part of the handover rather than leaving the owner to discover them later.

Record the scope of the successful sample honestly. A few passes support the agreed acceptance decision; they do not prove that every browser version, device and future release will work. Name the person responsible for a recurrence and the evidence they will need.

The guide to JavaScript errors breaking buttons and popups supports component investigation, while the website repair process explains assessment and approval. Start with the public URL, blocked task and two observed conditions. A good comparison will not mend the website by magic, but it makes a focused repair much easier to commission.

BEFORE YOU SEND THE REQUEST

Frequently asked questions.

Do you ask for passwords in the form?+

No. The public form never requests access. Secure credentials are requested only after the scope and quote are approved.

Who reviews the incident?+

The request goes to Jordi Ensenyat, founder of Code Barcelona and a WordPress specialist with more than 15 years of experience.

Is anything changed before the quote?+

No. Visible symptoms and scope are reviewed first. Intervention begins after approval and with a rollback path prepared.

Do you work internationally?+

Yes. WP Repair handles WordPress and WooCommerce incidents in English and Spanish through a remote service.
